The video will start in 8 Cancel A British company is developing armoured personnel carriers with autonomous technology set to "take soldiers off future battlefields". Aerospace firm BAE Systems is working with the Australian Army on two M113 AS4 vehicles. BAE said the Australian army would carry out experiments to "better understand the opportunities to employ autonomy on the battlefield". It is hoped work will be completed on them by October, reports CNBC. The vehicles could help carry out tasks including support and intelligence. Brad Yelland, chief technology officer of BAE Systems Australia, said the vehicles would respond to "an accelerating warfare environment". He added: "Autonomous technology will assist soldiers to respond in an accelerating warfare environment — increasing their speed of initiative to outpace, out-manoeuvre and out-think conventional and unconventional threats." Earlier this year, the British Army awarded a £1million contract to a software developer to "explore how virtual reality can be integrated into soldier training". However, the use of autonomous weaponry is sparking huge concern. The group Campaign to Stop Killer Robots believe it could accidentally trigger a war.
